overview head
We’re glad you want to learn about applying to Thomas Jefferson School, and we’re here to make the process as simple as possible for you and your family.
(If you’re an international applicant whose native language is not English, please click here instead.) You can always get in touch with us by emailing us at admissions@tjs.org, by phoning 314.843.4151, or by filling out our online request for more information.

Mrs. Roth or Mr. Colston will be happy to talk with you or your parents.

Next Steps

1. Send in the application forms, along with the application fee, $40 for applicants in the U.S., $100 for international applicants. You can choose one of the following three ways to acquire and fill out your application:
A) Apply online by using the Independent Schools of St. Louis Secondary School Application. We recommend this method if you are applying to more than one day school in St. Louis.
B) Submit the Boarding School Common Application. If you are applying to more than one boarding school, this is your best option.
C) Return the Application for Admission and Parent Questionnaire. You can download it here or have it mailed to you by requesting more information online or by phone.

2. Schedule a day to visit Thomas Jefferson. Visiting the campus is an essential part of the application process. You will attend morning classes with a student host, join us for lunch, and have an interview with a member of the admissions office. You may also take our entrance exam (see below). Click here for directions to the school.

3. Take entrance tests. You can either take our two-hour battery of tests on the afternoon of the day you visit the campus or submit your SSAT or ISEE results if you are applying to more than one school. There is no charge for taking our in-house entrance test.

4. Have an interview. Again, this normally happens the day you visit. If you live very far away and cannot visit, then we may talk with you by phone instead.

5. See that we get your transcript. It should come directly from your school and should include your current grades as well as your grades for at least the previous year.

6. See that we get two teacher recommendations. These should come from current teachers (preferably your math or English/language-arts teachers) or from a school counselor who knows you well. Usually these are written, but sometimes they are verbal. The Independent Schools of St. Louis Secondary School Application and Boarding School Common Application contain these forms, or your teachers can simply write detailed letters on your behalf.
