Financial Aid

At Thomas Jefferson, nearly 40 percent of our student body receives some level of financial assistance. We are committed to creating a diverse academic environment for our students, and our financial-aid program allows us to help families who cannot pay the full tuition. The financial-aid decision is completely separate from the admissions process.

Thomas Jefferson subscribes to the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS). Our financial-aid committee uses this as a tool to assess a family’s need and to compare the financial need of all applicants so that we can make awards as fairly as possible. Thomas Jefferson, not SSS, makes all financial-aid decisions. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that the school will be able to meet the demonstrated financial need of every family that applies for an award.

In situations where divorce or separation is an issue, Thomas Jefferson requires both natural parents and any stepparents to submit information. A family’s ability to contribute to its child’s education is based on the income and assets of both natural parents and any stepparents.

Steps for Applying for Financial Aid

1. Request a Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) application to be included with the school’s admissions materials. This information can also be accessed online.

2. Carefully complete the PFS form and submit it to the SSS by mail or online.

3. Mail a photocopy of your current tax return (including all schedules and a copy of the 1040 form) directly to Thomas Jefferson School. Do not send your tax return to the SSS.

Financial-Aid Application Deadlines

For Early Decision applicants, the above information must be submitted by November 15. Financial-aid decisions will be mailed to families at the end of December.

For Regular Decision applications, the PFS must be submitted to the SSS by January 10, and the current IRS tax return must be sent to Thomas Jefferson School by February 15. Financial-aid decisions are mailed to families during the second week of March.

Families that apply after March 31 are encouraged to send their PFS form directly to Thomas Jefferson School as soon as it is available. The SSS provides us with the means to analyze the data by hand.

All documentation for a financial-aid application is treated confidentially. It is kept in a secure file and is read only by members of the financial-aid committee.

Thomas Jefferson School admits students of any race, color, religion, sex, or national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students of the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, financial-aid programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs.
